As attorneys, we often take ourselves too
seriously, and it’s healthy and a nice break
to have one page a month that is out of the
ordinary compared to the other 50 to 80
pages a month that are almost all business.
Most good magazines reserve a place, and
often the last page, to an opinion piece or
something on the lighter side. ARIZONA
ATTORNEY has in the past had very good
humor articles or articles that are designed
to be a fun contrast to the rest of the magazine, and should continue that practice (I
have saved many of the articles over the
years). The articles by Roxie and Grant,
and occasionally others, are a welcome part
of my reading of ARIZONA ATTORNEY. I
rarely agree with Roxie, and her articles
confirm for me why I think the way I do. I
usually agree with Grant, but not always,
and his articles make me question why I
think the way I do.
I’m sure there are many others who
believe just the opposite from me, and
that’s as it should be. The concepts of freedom and diversity
are not, “If it doesn’t apply to
everyone, we shouldn’t be sharing it with everyone!” but
instead are, “Even though it
doesn’t apply to everyone, our
variety of opinions and backgrounds make it worth sharing
with everyone.” Heaven help us
when we become so locked into
our thinking that we aren’t willing to hear new ideas, even if
they are non-scholarly, political
or contrary to our own opinion.
It’s only one page a month, for
Pete’s sake!
If you don’t like reading it,
just turn the page (Cohen v.
California, 403 U.S. 15
(1971)). You can close the
magazine all the more quickly and get back to the rat race.
