The Ethics Hotline offers free advice for all State Bar members. In our 2017 member survey,
nearly 80% of active attorneys called it a valuable service. In 2016 staff attorneys answered
2,384 calls to the Ethics Hotline. Direct cost associated with the hotline, including overhead
allocation, was $304,800.
Operate the Fee Arbitration Program?
The State Bar of Arizona’s Fee Arbitration Program has proven to be a valuable resource for both
attorneys and consumers. The free voluntary service allows both sides to reach an agreement
when fees over $500 are the primary issue. The program is staffed by one full-time employee and
a 60-member volunteer committee, with each member working independently on a specific case.
Total cost of the program, including overhead, was $154,120.
Publish Arizona Attorney Magazine?
Arizona Attorney Magazine is produced 11 times a year by the State
Bar. Long considered one of the Bar’s most valuable benefits, it is an
award-winning publication that provides legal articles every month.
In 2016, the cost to produce the magazine, including overhead, was
$814,307. As a result of advertising revenue that totaled $975,827,
the magazine returned $161,520 to the Bar.
Provide Fastcase to Members?
Fastcase is a service that provides a free legal research tool for all members.
In 2016, the Bar paid Fastcase an annual subscription of $80,004, enabling
4,077 members to login 71,217 times and conduct 281,487 searches.
Produce the 2016 Economics of Law
Practice in Arizona Report?
Since 1997 the Bar has published this report to provide members with
information regarding median hourly billing rates, salaries, and office
expenses. The report, which is summarized in Arizona Attorney Magazine,
helps members set up new offices, reevaluate their operating costs, and justify
billing rates to the courts. Direct expenses for the seventh print edition of the
complete report totaled $13,146, which included professional fees paid to the
research company and printing. By the end of 2016 revenue from sales was
$10,950. The publication sales will continue for two years, and revenue is
expected to exceed all direct expenses.
