Mary Anne Richey Breakfast
Friday, June 21 • 7: 30 a.m.
The Arizona Women Lawyers Association will host the annual Mary Anne Richey Breakfast on Friday,
June 21 at 7: 30 a.m. in conjunction with the State Bar of Arizona Annual Convention.
Proceeds and donations from the breakfast funds the Mary Anne Richey Scholarship, named in honor of the late Honor-
able Mary Anne Richey, United States District Judge for the District of Arizona, a graduate of the University of Arizona
College of Law.
The Mary Anne Richey Scholarship is awarded to one student from the
James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona and one
student from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State
University, based upon demonstrated commitment to public service.
Timed to make a difference in the law student’s life, the scholarship is
awarded during the second semester of the first year, when some students
may be questioning the decision to attend law school. Since the scholarship’s inception in 1988, it has boosted students’ morale and reaffirmed
their vision of the law as a public service profession. For the last few years,
the scholarship has been in the amount of $1,000 for each recipient.
The fund is supported by the AWLA and is administered through the
Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. Contributions may be made at the breakfast by credit card or check payable
to the Mary Anne Richey Scholarship. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
A highlight of the breakfast is the presentation of the Sarah Herring Sorin Award, named in honor of Arizona’s first woman lawyer. The award recipient is an AWLA member who has demonstrated support and encouragement for the advancement of women in the legal profession. Past recipients are Helen Perry Grimwood, Doris Mindell, Roxana C. Bacon,
Grace McIlvain, the Honorable Mary M. Schroeder, Barbara Atwood, Laura Cardinal, Amy Schwartz, Georgia Staton, the
Honorable Janis Ann Sterling (retired), the Honorable Ruth V. McGregor (retired), Amelia Craig Cramer, Paige Martin,
and the Honorable Rebecca White Berch. Current members of the
AWLA State Board of Directors are not eligible; however, ex officio
members of the Board may be nominated to receive the award.
