Justice and Cultural Awareness
PART I: 8: 45 a.m. – Noon
After a brief overview of the legal relationship between federal, state,
and tribal governments, this panel will explore: ( 1) how the Navajo community resolves
conflict by use of a peacemaking process; and ( 2) the benefits of restorative justice as it
pertains to the Yavapai-Apache Nation’s Healing to Wellness Courts.

Cultural Awareness
Our initial reactions and assumptions about people are often based on unconscious
biases related to cultural or ethnic differences. Through exercises geared toward
exploring our reactions to others, participants learn to identify bias, embrace differences,
and avoid labeling people.

Getting Past the Emotion in Mediation
PART II: 2 p.m. – 5: 15 p.m.
This hands-on program is designed to build specific skills in dealing with emotional
or difficult people in the mediation process. After an initial presentation, participants
will learn and practice techniques to address the anger, intransigence, tears and other
emotional barriers to resolution of disputes.
