Complex Issues in Probate,
Estate Planning and
Public Benefits
THURSDAY
The morning session of this seminar will cover the various types of
government benefits, discuss how to qualify for each government
program, compare first-party special needs trusts vs. third-party
special needs trusts, and provide an in-depth analysis of more
complicated estate planning issues, such as how to deal with children
from prior marriages, second marriages, beneficiary designations
and more.
The afternoon session will begin with a discussion of issues that arise
in estate and trust administration, such as what happens when someone believes the decedent signed estate planning documents when he
or she lacked mental capacity, or approaches to interpreting an estate
planning document after the decedent’s death. The final segment will
involve audience participation and a panel discussion with probate
judges from several counties in the state.
Audience participation is encouraged, and participants may submit
questions to speakers via microphone, written notes, email or Twitter.

Welcoming Wellness, Health
and Happiness into Your Law
Practice and Your Life
Moving forward from the successful Beyond Burnout Program at the
2012 Bar Convention, this program will focus on specific tips for creating a sense of wellness in your practice of law and your life through
meditation and mindfulness. The keynote speaker will be Sarah
McLean, founding director of the McLean Meditation Institute in
Sedona and formerly the education director for the Chopra Center
for Wellbeing. Sarah will present practical tips for developing a meditation practice and lead various mindfulness exercises. Maya Nahra,
a registered dietitian and founder of My Intentful Life, LLC, will
address the shocking effects of sugar and how we create automatic
unhealthy eating patterns, which can create disease and long-term
health problems, plus how to break those patterns. Attorney Leonard
Scheff, from Tucson, will discuss techniques to transform anger into
productive responses. Attorney Jere Friedman will explore ways to
re-imagine our law practices, employ empathic listening and lead us
in a gong meditation. The Hon. Roland Steinle, Hon. Donn Kessler,
Alisa Gray and Prof. Mary Guerra will provide anecdotal accounts on
how they use contemplative and wellness practices to improve their
professional and personal lives, and will lead us in additional meditation and yoga exercises. Desert Song Yoga and Massage will offer free
chair massages during the program.
