VOLUME 52, NO. 4
Trust but verify. That may be good advice in foreign affairs,
but it’s no less helpful in gaining career insight. After all, like other commodities, advice may be worth what you pay for it. That’s why relying
on fortune cookies may be a (takeout) recipe for disaster.
But who can resist their lure?
A few months ago, I received the following complimentary premo-
nition:
Wary but intrigued, I taped the cookie-borne prediction to my wall.
And waited. I generally think that such omens cast a
broad shadow, so I bided my time, waiting to see if pres-
tige would grace someone in my circle—or me.
Now, I do understand that the fortune-cookie indus-
trial complex relies on self-fulfilling prophecies: Wait
long enough, and any advice will eventually come true.
(Except this, which I received a few years ago: “Something
unusual will happen at work next week.” Still waiting.)
Anyway, this past month renewed my faith in the ad-
vice you gain by cracking open a hard sweetened shell.
I am pleased to report that attorney Ashley Kasarjian
prevailed in the 2015 Athena Awards. The employment
and labor attorney from Snell & Wilmer is the honoree in
the Young Professional category.
Ashley is terrific in many ways, and we are privileged to
have her serve as the Editorial Board Chair for ARIZONA
ATTORNEY. I’ve been lucky to work with great chairs over
the years, but this is the first time an Athena has graced
the position!
The Athena is bestowed on
a small and impressive group of
women. Honorees “demonstrate
inspiring leadership within their
industry, have mentored women
throughout their career,
and have dedicated them-
selves to the community
through various activities
and charities.” (Detail:

gratulations to Ashley on
your honor from the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce!
Cementing the cookie’s wisdom is an award I received the
same month. Thank you to the National Association of Bar
Executives for recognizing me with its E. A. “Wally” Richter
Leadership Award. You can read more about it here: http://

In the meantime: Who’s up for some takeout?
