Lilia Alvarez is in it for
the long haul.
Lilia is a volunteer
attorney for the Flor-
ence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Proj-
ect (FIRRP). FIRRP’s clients are refugees,
unaccompanied children, victims of domes-
tic violence, parents with U.S.-citizen
children, and longtime lawful permanent
residents. There is no entitlement to an
attorney in immigration court, and more
than 80 percent of detained immigrants in
removal proceedings go unrepresented due
to indigence. FIRRP’s small staff provides
workshops for those
going forward pro
se, but with nearly
detained in Arizona
on any given night,
there is a pressing
need for volunteer attorneys to take on the
most compelling and complex cases.
FIRRP has a broad pool of pro bono
attorneys, but the pool is not always deep.
